Exploring A Job Change

As I meet with clients, it is not uncommon to discuss the prospect of changing careers. In this environment, it is sometimes forced upon them in the form of a pink slip. If you have always dreamed of doing something different, even if you are still employed, let me share an idea with you that I gave to a client recently.

This individual always dreamed of opening a wine tasting shop. He is in his 50’s and gainfully employed, has no children to care for, but he didn’t know how to get started. My suggestion was to find a well run shop and frequent it. Get to know the owner and the staff, observing how it is run. Over time, inquire whether there was any part-time or weekend hours available for working as an employee at the shop. Since he has a full time job, wages is not an issue. Offer to help with some of the managerial duties, even offering to watch the shop while the owner is on vacation. He would need to use his own vacation to do this, but the experience is worth it. The on-the-job experience could prove invaluable in determining whether this is a viable option in the future.

This approach can be applied to any vocation one might consider. Before you take the plunge, be certain to do your homework to provide you with the highest probability of success. Good hunting!
